Among those who discipline, I am the rod of correction; among those who seek victory, I am statecraft. I am the silence that guards secrets, and the knowledge that lives in those who truly know.

Bhāṣyakāra purports

  • Śaṅkaraadvaita

    Among those who restrain the unruly, I am the rod of chastisement (daṇḍa) — the very cause by which the unsubdued are brought to discipline. Among those who seek victory, I am statecraft (nīti), the ordering of means toward conquest. Among things to be guarded, I am silence (mauna); and among knowers, I am their knowledge (jñāna) itself.

  • Rāmānujaviśiṣṭādvaita

    I am the rod of punishment (daṇḍa) belonging to those who impose penalty on transgressors of right order; I am the statecraft (nīti), the means of victory, belonging to those who desire to conquer. Among the secret things that must be kept, I am silence (mauna); and I am the knowledge (jñāna) of those who possess it.

  • Madhvadvaita

    I, Hari — eternally distinct from and supremely independent of all jīvas — am the rod (daṇḍa) that chastises, the statecraft (nīti) that guides toward victory, the silence (mauna) that guards secrets, and the true knowledge (jñāna) that belongs to genuine knowers, in whom I alone function as the indwelling regulator.

  • Vallabhaśuddhādvaita

    The rod (daṇḍa) by which Bhagavān chastised Kālīya and other insolent ones is a form of the Lord himself — his līlā-prasāda made manifest as corrective power. All else the verse names — nīti, mauna, jñāna — are equally his self-disclosure, transparent to the devotee who sees Kṛṣṇa's own anubhava (direct presence) in every ordered function.

  • Śrīdharabhakti

    Among those who subdue, I am the rod (daṇḍa) — that by which even the unrestrained are brought to restraint, a divine vibhūti. Among those who desire to conquer, I am the statecraft (nīti) taking the form of sāma and the other means. Among things that must be guarded, I am silence (mauna), non-speech — for the intention of one who keeps silent cannot be known. Among knowers of reality (tattva-jñānins), I am their knowledge (jñāna).

  • Madhusūdanaadvaita-bhakti

    I am the restraining rod (daṇḍa) — the cause of correction that turns those walking crooked paths back onto the straight; I am the statecraft (nīti), the illuminator of the means of conquest, for those who desire victory. Among secret things I am silence (mauna) — speech-restraint — for the one who keeps silent cannot have his intention discerned. And I am the knowledge (jñāna) of the knowers — that non-dual self-apprehension (advitīyātma-sākṣātkāra), born of the ripening of śravaṇa-manana-nididhyāsana, which destroys all ignorance.
