Even one of the worst conduct, if he worships Me with ananya-bhak, is to be considered a sadhu. He is samyak vyavasitah. The verse's claim is precise. Not that bad behavior is excused; that the inner resolve, when it has actually fixed on Krishna alone, is itself the mark of the sadhu — regardless of the residual prarabdha.

Shankara reads the verse with characteristic care. Su-durachara means extreme outer conduct; the qualifier ananya-bhak carries the weight. The bhakta who worships Krishna with no other refuge has done the inner samkalpa that the verse names. Sadhuh eva sah mantavyah — he is to be regarded as a sadhu — because the samyak-vyavasaya, the right resolve, is itself the criterion. The body's residual conduct is the prarabdha working out; the resolve's direction is the spiritual reality.

Madhusudana reads the verse as the chapter's most striking inversion. The trayi-dharma practitioner of 9.20 with proper conduct but bound samkalpa wins only gata-agatam. The su-durachara of 9.30 with ananya-bhak is samyak-vyavasita and reaches the highest. The criterion is the resolve, not the conduct. The verse does not abolish the moral order; it locates the operating spiritual axis precisely.

Ramanuja reads with characteristic warmth. Even the soul whose past or present conduct is severely impure, if he has now turned ananya-bhak to Krishna, has done the only thing that matters at the spiritual register. The conduct will follow — the next verse 9.31 promises that explicitly — but the criterion of being sadhu is already met by the inner orientation.

Madhva reads the verse strictly: ananya-bhak in Hari is itself the samyak-vyavasaya; the durachara was the working out of purva-karma, but the new resolve has redirected the path. The dependence-frame holds; the eternal distinction is preserved; the relation has changed.

Vallabha reads through pushti-marga: ananya-bhak is itself Krishna's grace operating through the soul; the durachara was the soul's past condition, but the grace is independent of past conduct.

Shridhara reads cleanly: the resolve toward Krishna alone is the structural marker.

Vyavahāra · try it in your life

Advaita

When you catch yourself judging someone whose life looks chaotic but whose inner orientation is consistently toward what is Real—toward honest inquiry, non-deceptive relationship, or genuine surrender—recognise that Śaṅkara's frame applies: the inner resolve (samyak-vyavasāya) outweighs the residual behavioural momentum. Do not wait for the exterior to be clean before you regard the person as being on the path.

Viśiṣṭādvaita

In a team or community context, Rāmānuja's 'svalpam vaikalyam' discipline applies: when someone whose core commitment to the work (or to dharmic service) is clear and deep makes a behavioural lapse, treat the lapse as a small deficiency and the commitment as the signal. Honour the resolve; address the lapse as logistics, not as character condemnation.

Dvaita

Madhva's near-impossibility reading is a diagnostic tool: if someone claims both vile conduct and sincere devotion, interrogate whether the bhakti is real or performed. The verse does not license easy exemption—it marks a rare, punya-heavy exception. In your own practice: do not use this verse to paper over areas where conduct and inner commitment are genuinely misaligned.

Śuddhādvaita

Vallabha's puṣṭi frame: when you find yourself unable to achieve external purity of conduct—diet, speech, social norms—do not let that failure become a barrier to citta-prāvaṇya (the mind's flow toward what you love most deeply). The Lord's purifying grace works from the inside out. Keep the inner channel open even when the outer is messy.

Bhakti

Śrīdhara's ananya-bhāk reading is a practical monotheism of attention: in any given period of work or prayer, is your attention consolidated on one centre of meaning, or is it fragmented across competing loyalties? The verse is less about conduct and more about the integrity of orientation. Reduce the number of 'other gods'—competing allegiances, approval-seeking, hedged commitments—and the rest will follow.

Advaita-Bhakti

Madhusūdana's bhāgyodaya (fortunate rise of destiny) framing releases you from the need to construct a clean narrative of transformation. Sometimes grace arrives before the life is ready for it—Ajāmila did not intend liberation. When you notice an unexpected opening toward depth, coherence, or love, do not dismiss it because the surrounding conditions are not yet worthy. Receive it; the śodhana (purification) follows.
