The chapter closes with a single integrating verse. Yoking the self in this way, mat-parayana, you will reach Me. Four imperatives, one closing promise. The four are precise: manas, bhakti, yaga, namas. Mind, devotion, sacrifice, prostration. Each is one mode by which the soul aligns with Krishna; together they constitute the complete inner orientation the chapter has been preparing.

Shankara reads the four imperatives as the operational summary of the chapter. Mat-manah — manas always on Krishna. Mat-bhakta — devotion to Krishna alone. Mat-yaji — every yajna directed to Krishna. Mam namaskuru — outer prostration as the seal of the inner orientation. Yuktva evam atmanam — yoking the self in this fourfold way — mat-parayana — having Krishna as the supreme refuge — mam eva eshyasi: you will reach Me alone. The verse contains nothing extra; the four are sufficient.

Madhusudana reads the verse as ch9's signature integration. The four-fold practice is not separate from what came earlier; it is the chapter's whole sweep folded into a single sloka the disciple can carry. Mat-manah corresponds to the inner orientation; mat-bhakta to the relational devotion; mat-yaji to the offering frame of 9.16-9.27; mam namaskuru to the surrender. The four span all the registers.

Ramanuja reads with characteristic warmth. The verse is Krishna's direct mat-prayana instruction to the bhakta. Holding the manas on Krishna, dwelling in bhakti, offering everything as yajna, bowing to him — this is the natural shape of the bhakta's life, not a sequence of separate disciplines. The closing mam eva eshyasi confirms the reach: not to a station near Krishna, not to a partial absorption, but to Krishna himself.

Madhva reads the four imperatives as the natural mode of the paratantra jiva who has recognized Hari. Each imperative is a mode of dependence acknowledged.

Vallabha reads the close as pushti-marga's full prescription: the four imperatives describe the bhakta's continuous condition under Krishna's prasada.

Shridhara reads the verse cleanly: the four together constitute the complete upasana, and the upasana reaches Krishna directly.

Vyavahāra · try it in your life

Advaita

When you notice yourself mentally rehearsing a conversation with someone — anxious about outcome, calculating response — ask: whose mind is this? Return the rehearsal to silence. 'Man-manā' is not thinking about Brahman; it is ceasing to colonize the present with a constructed future-other.

Viśiṣṭādvaita

In a relationship of genuine care (parent, teacher, close friend), practice 'tailadhārāvad' (stream-of-oil) attention — unbroken, non-instrumental, present to the actual person rather than to your narrative about them. Rāmānuja's 'vātsalya' (parental tenderness) is a trainable quality, not a feeling that either arrives or doesn't.

Dvaita

Before beginning any significant work, explicitly acknowledge that the capacity to do it is not yours ('paratantra' — dependent nature). This is not self-deprecation; it is accurate accounting. Madhva's 'namaskuru' is the daily reorientation that prevents the inflation of the 'jīva' into the source.

Śuddhādvaita

Identify one relationship or practice in your life where Vallabha's 'tadīya' (belonging-to-him) logic applies — where you do what you do not as self-expression but as stewardship of something entrusted. Practice surrendering the outcome of that domain for one week.

Bhakti

Śrīdhara's integration: take one ordinary task today (a meal prepared, a message sent, an object cleaned) and do it as one of the four — 'man-manā' (minded toward the sacred), 'mad-bhakta' (as service), 'mad-yājī' (as offering), or 'namaskuru' (as prostration). The verse is a liturgy for ordinary action, not a prescription for retreat.

Advaita-Bhakti

Madhusūdana's diagnostic — are you 'tan-manā' without being 'tad-bhakta'? Apply this to your work: you can be mentally absorbed in a project while remaining emotionally defended, self-protective, un-given. Notice where absorption has not yet become surrender. That gap is the practice.
