Na dveshti akushalam karma — does not hate inauspicious action. Kushale na anushajjate — does not cling to auspicious. Tyagi sattva-samavishtah — the renouncer pervaded by sattva. Medhavi — wise. Chhinna-samshayah — with doubts cut.

Krishna names four marks of the sattvika tyagi: no aversion to unwelcome duty, no clinging to pleasant duty, sattva-saturation, doubt-severance. The four together name an interior that has settled.

Shankara reads the sattvika tyagi as one who neither hates akushala karma as an obstacle to liberation nor clings to kushala karma as a cherished means.

Shankara anchors this in the tyagi's prior abandonment of both sanga and phala: the one who performs nitya-karma without ego-ownership is already released from preference among karmas. The four marks together describe the bhakta whose action operates uniformly across pleasant and unpleasant duties.

Madhusudana reads the verse as the crowning fruit of sattvika tyaga: purified antahkarana cleansed of rajas and tamas by bhagavad-arpita-nitya-karma — daily action offered to Bhagavan — becomes fit for the Vedanta maha-vakya, producing the maha-meditation that issues in 'aham brahmasmi.' The medhavi is thus sthita-prajna — established in wisdom — and with avidya cut, doubts are cut. Sattvika tyaga's full ripening is the jnana-stable condition.

Ramanuja reads the one pervaded by sattva, endowed with yathavasthita-tattva-jnana — knowledge of things as they truly are — as having relinquished kartritva, sanga, phala in every action — and therefore performs neither aversion toward sin-producing karma nor attachment toward svarga-yielding karma. Akushala here means inadvertently produced negative karma; the bhakta neither hates its arising nor clings to its avoidance because both belong to Bhagavan's economy. The bhakti-frame's diagnostic is precise.

Madhva reads the genuine tyagi as neither recoiling from inauspicious action nor clinging to the auspicious. For the paratantra-jiva, such recoiling or clinging would be assertion of svatantra-agency that no jiva possesses. Hatred of akushala karma presumes the right to refuse what Hari has assigned; clinging to kushala karma presumes the right to expect particular results. Both are inversions; the sattvika tyagi is recognizable by their absence.

Vallabha groups this verse with 18.11: the sattvika tyagi is sattva-samavishta and has relinquished atma-sukha-atirikta-phala — every fruit beyond the joy that is identical with Krishna's own bliss — and has shed kartritva. Therefore he neither rejoices in kushala karma yielding svarga and progeny nor is disturbed by akushala pramadika karma. Akushala is glossed as inadvertent — pramada — not deliberate. The bhakta's life flows uniformly through both.

Shridhara reads the sattvika tyagi's freedom from aversion and attachment as direct testimony to sthira-buddhi — stable discernment. One who can endure great paribhava — dishonor — and surrender great svarga-sukha will hardly be shaken by momentary cold or heat. The akushala here is concretized as a harsh-season duty: cold early-morning bath in winter; the bhakta does not flinch. The chapter's ideal interior is now drawn precisely.

Advaita

Before performing any distasteful obligation — a tedious report, an uncomfortable conversation — notice whether the resistance is to the action itself or to the imagined 'I' who must do it. The Shankara-framed practice: locate the witness who neither hates the task nor craves the reward, and perform from there.

Dvaita

In competitive or high-stakes contexts, resist the reflex to claim personal credit for outcomes that went well or to blame the situation for outcomes that went badly. The Dvaita daily practice is to attribute both in real time to Hari-tantrata — not as a slogan but as a conscious pause before the attribution reflex fires.

Bhakti

Use Shridhara's proportioning move in physical discomfort or minor social friction: 'compared to what I have chosen to endure for what matters most, this is negligible.' This is not suppression — it is intelligent scaling. The medhavi does not deny the cold; they hold it in proportion.

Advaita-Bhakti

Madhusudana's synthesis applied to daily sadhana (practice): begin with devoted, dedicated action (offering your work to Bhagavan), let that clean the mirror of the mind, and then notice the moments of sthita-prajna — equanimity that is not achieved by effort but discovered when the mirror is clear. Neither the devotion nor the clarity is the whole; track both.
