meaning

Among the Sāman chants I am the Bṛhat-sāman, among metres the Gāyatrī, among months Mārgaśīrṣa, and among seasons I am spring.

Bhāṣyakāra purports

  • Śaṅkaraadvaita

Among the Sāmans, I am the Bṛhat-sāman — the preeminent one (pradhāna) among all Sāma melodies. Among metres (chandas), I am the Gāyatrī — specifically the Gāyatrī verse distinguished by its metre-form (chandoviśiṣṭa). Among months I am Mārgaśīrṣa; among seasons, the flower-bearer (kusumākara), spring.

divergence: Śaṅkara bhāṣya present; bṛhatsāma = pradhāna; Gāyatrī described as chandoviśiṣṭānām ṛcām gāyatrī ṛk.

  • Rāmānujaviśiṣṭādvaita

Among the Sāmans I am the Bṛhat-sāman; among metres, the Gāyatrī; among seasons, Kusumākara — spring. Each of these represents a form in which Bhagavān's pervasive sovereignty (sarvaiśvarya) shines most luminously, sustaining the devotee's contemplative gaze.

divergence: Rāmānuja bhāṣya present but terse: lists bṛhatsāma, gāyatrī, kusumākara without extension.

  • Madhvadvaita

Among Sāmans, I — Hari, the supreme independent reality — am the Bṛhat-sāman, in which the lordship of the highest sovereign is hymned. Among metres, the Gāyatrī; among seasons, spring. The jīva who hears these names uttered by Bhagavān knows that dependence (pāratantrya) on Hari is the unchanging truth of all manifold excellence.

divergence: Madhva bhāṣya explicitly absent per payload. Rendering inferred from Dvaita doctrine; flagged accordingly.

  • Vallabhaśuddhādvaita

Among Sāmans I am the Bṛhat-sāman — the melody sung to the verse 'tvām iddhi havāmahe,' through which Indra is praised as the lord of all lords, thus displaying pre-eminence (śraiṣṭhya). Among mantras, the Gāyatrī is My vibhūti because it reveals My own form (matsvarūpapratipādakatva) and is to be meditated upon by My devotees. Among months, Mārgaśīrṣa — the season of fulfilment for the maidens' vow, fit for enjoyment. Among seasons, Kusumākara — spring — because śruti ordains it as the season for sacred fire and because it perpetually pervades Vṛndāvana.

divergence: Vallabha bhāṣya well-attested; references tvām iddhi havāmahe ṛc, kumārikā vow, Vṛndāvana, vāsante agnīn ādhīta śruti.

  • Śrīdharabhakti

Among the Sāmans, I am the Bṛhat-sāman — sung to the verse 'tvām iddhi havāmahe,' whereby Indra's universal lordship is praised, establishing its pre-eminence (śraiṣṭhya). Among metres I am the Gāyatrī — supreme because it generates the second birth of twice-borns (dvijatva) and because of the soma-retrieval (somāharaṇa) myth. Among seasons, Kusumākara, spring.

divergence: Śrīdhara bhāṣya present; dvijatva, somāharaṇa for Gāyatrī; tvām iddhi ṛc for Bṛhat-sāman.

  • Madhusūdanaadvaita-bhakti

Having said 'of the Vedas I am the Sāmaveda,' here is a further specification: among the Sāman melodies — chants mounted on Ṛg verses — I am the Bṛhat-sāman, sung at the atirātra sacrifice as the pṛṣṭha-stotra praising Indra as the lord of all lords. Among metres I am the Gāyatrī — supreme by reason of generating the second birth, pervading the three savanas, and the celebrated Śatapatha account in which the Gāyatrī alone retrieved the soma that Jagatī and Triṣṭubh failed to bring. Among months, the auspicious Mārgaśīrṣa, abundant in new rice. Among seasons, Kusumākara — spring, the season for upanayana, for sacred fires, for Soma-sacrifice, for joy even among the inert — as the śāstras repeatedly declare.

divergence: Madhusūdana bhāṣya richly attested; Śatapatha soma-retrieval myth, Chāndogya 'gāyatrī vā idaṃ sarvam,' atirātra pṛṣṭha-stotra, multiple vāsante śāstra injunctions.
