Mudha-grahena — by foolish stubbornness. Atmanah pidaya — through self-affliction. Tapas kriyate — austerity is performed. Or parasya utsadana-artham — for the destruction of another. Tat tamasam udahritam — that is declared tamasika.

Krishna names two distinct tamasika tapas-motivations: blind self-torture, and active aim of harming others. Both are tamas operating through the form of austerity.

Shankara reads austerity performed out of mudha-graha — foolish, indiscriminate clinging — rooted in aviveka — and which inflicts pida on the body-mind complex; or which aims at utsadana — ruin — of another. Such austerity is tamasika. The mudha-grahena is fixed determination born of non-discernment: the practitioner mistakes severity for spirituality. Pida-aimed-at-self and utsadana-aimed-at-other are the two structural disorientations of the tamasika ascetic.

Madhusudana specifies mudha-graha as aviveka-atishaya-krita duragraha — obstinacy born of an excess of non-discrimination. The locus of pida is precisely deha-indriya-sanghata — the aggregate of body and sense-organs. This specification is philosophically loaded: it signals that tamasika tapas mistakes the deha-indriya-sanghata for the atman, afflicting the not-self in the name of the self. The category-error is structural; the tapas's effect is therefore not purification but bondage-deepening.

Ramanuja reads those who are mudha performing tapas through mudha-graha — obstinate clinging mudhah adopt — without examining their own shakti — capacity. When such self-inflicted pida has as its motive the utsadana of another, the entire act is severed from kainkarya to Bhagavan and falls into the tamasic register. The bhakti-frame: tapas without Bhagavan-orientation cannot be tapas; pida-aimed-at-other is structurally the opposite of bhakta's mode.

Madhva reads on the bheda-frame: the jiva, paratantra, has no ground for self-willed mortification. Its tapas derives legitimacy only from svatantra Hari's command. Mudha-graha is the inversion of the dependent mode — the jiva claims a self-grounding it does not have, and the resulting tapas is structurally tamasika even when severe. Pida-aimed-at-other compounds the inversion. The bheda's diagnostic is precise.

Vallabha reads mudha-graha as inverting pushti-marga at its root. Tapas through self-willed mudha-graha — driven by atmanah pidaya or by parasya-utsadana-artham — is tamasa. It proceeds entirely from the contracted, self-asserting jiva and admits no opening for Krishna's prasada. Pushti is a flow that requires receptivity; mudha-graha is a posture of refusal. The tamasika tapas is therefore the most categorically blocked from the chapter's whole soteriology.

Shridhara glosses mudha-graha as aviveka-krita duragraha — stubborn, self-willed fixity born of non-discrimination — and identifies two forms of tamasika tapas: self-pida — bodily affliction undertaken without discernment — and abhichara-rupa tapas aimed at another's vinasha. The term abhichara-rupa is Shridhara's distinctive contribution: it frames the harmful-to-other tapas as malign-magic-shaped — sorcery in the form of austerity. The bhakta's diagnostic recognizes both forms.

Advaita

Before any regimen of self-discipline — fasting, silence, vigorous practice — ask: 'Is this accompanied by viveka (discriminative clarity) or by aviveka-nishchaya (a conclusion reached without discrimination)?' Tamasic tapas often disguises itself as intensity. The test: can I articulate clearly what this practice is purifying in me, and why? If the honest answer is 'I am just pushing harder,' Shankara's flag applies.

Dvaita

In Dvaita terms, ask whether any intense austerity you are contemplating is oriented toward Hari-priti (pleasing Vishnu) or toward demonstrating your own will-power. Tamasic tapas is self-willed; it reports to the self's own narrative of virtue. The corrective is to hand the practice back to Vishnu as dependent worship — which means the practice must actually serve his purposes, not your performance of them.

Bhakti

Sridhara's abhichara-rupa category has a modern analog: any practice, competitive fast, or public austerity whose hidden purpose is to damage another's standing, force another's compliance, or win a social contest. This includes guilt-tripping through self-deprivation ('see how much I suffer because of you'). The bhakti test: does this practice increase openness to Bhagavan and warmth toward others, or does it feed grievance?

Advaita-Bhakti

Madhusudana's deha-indriya-sanghata specification offers a practical diagnostic: if a discipline is being done to or through the body-sense complex without any element of witness-awareness, it is likely disciplining the not-self while calling it self-discipline. The shishtaih criterion adds a community check — seek out practitioners the shishta tradition recognizes as realized, and let their testimony calibrate whether your practice is moving toward light or deeper fixation.
