You are Vāyu, Yama, Agni, Varuṇa, the moon, Prajāpati, and the great-grandfather of all. I bow to you a thousand times, and a thousand times again, for there is no end to bowing.

You are Vayu, Yama, Agni, Varuna, Shashanka, Prajapati, the great-grandfather. Bows to You a thousand times — and again, again, bows again. The verse turns into pure namaskara. Six deva-names plus prapitamaha. Then the doubled namaskara repeated, and again again.

Shankara reads the verse as the disciple's stuti shifting from doctrinal address to repeated bow. Each named deva is identified with Krishna; the prapitamaha — great-grandfather of all beings — completes the genealogical chain. The doubled namah namah — bows, bows — and the punah cha bhuyah api — and again, and even more — names the bhakta's exhausted-yet-continuing posture.

Madhusudana reads the verse as the disciple's recognition that no fixed number of bows suffices. Sahasra-kritvah — a thousand times — is the hyperbole of devotion; punah cha bhuyah api — and again, again, more — names that no quantity of bowing exhausts what is owed.

Ramanuja reads with characteristic warmth: each named deva is Bhagavan's antaryamin presence in that role; the bowing is appropriate to each.

Madhva reads on the bheda-frame: each deva is paratantra; the prapitamaha role and all the deva-roles are svatantra Hari's.

Vallabha reads through pushti-marga: each deva is prasada's channel; the bhakta bows endlessly.

Shridhara reads cleanly: six devas named, prapitamaha, thousand bows, and yet more.

Vyavahāra · try it in your life

Advaita

When you encounter authority figures in your life — a manager, a doctor, a judge — Śaṅkara's reading invites you to see each role as a local functional name for the one awareness that animates all governance. This is not a reason to collapse all distinctions, but to act without compulsive resentment toward any particular authority, recognizing the role rather than reifying the person into an ultimate adversary or savior.

Viśiṣṭādvaita

Rāmānuja's point that Bhagavān is the ātman of every Prajāpati suggests a practice: when serving in an institutional role — parent, teacher, civic leader — treat the function itself as kainkarya (service to the inner sovereign), not merely an ego project. The moment you identify your role as 'mine to own' you have forgotten that the word for your role is itself a name of the Lord.

Dvaita

Madhva's insistence on hierarchical dependence offers a corrective to the modern impulse to flatten all power relations. In organizational life, acknowledging genuine differences in authority and competence — without resentment or obsequiousness — is the Dvaita practice: you are an abhimānin (non-sovereign agent) whose best work comes from clear-eyed acknowledgment of what you depend on, not from the pretense of self-sufficiency.

Śuddhādvaita

Vallabha's sabhaya prostration — fearful wonder at inexhaustible aiśvarya — suggests an attitude toward creative work: approach your craft with awe at the inexhaustible source rather than self-congratulation at output. The thousand-fold bow is the artist's posture of remaining perpetually a student of the source that flows through them, never declaring the well dry or the discipline mastered.

Bhakti

Śrīdhara's 'tṛptim anadhigacchan' (finding no satiation) is the antidote to transactional spiritual practice — checking a box, completing a retreat, finishing a course and moving on. The devotional life Śrīdhara describes has no completion state; gratitude and reverence, once genuinely kindled, do not arrive at an endpoint but become a sustained orientation. In everyday terms: cultivate practices you return to not because they are unfinished but because they are inexhaustible.

Advaita-Bhakti

Madhusūdana's 'varākasya' (for this wretch too) models the integration of intellectual humility with devotional courage: you need not resolve your sense of unworthiness before approaching the infinite — indeed, the very sense of smallness before vastness is the correct posture. In professional and creative life, the 'alaṃ-pratyaya-abhāva' (absence of the sense of enough) that Madhusūdana identifies as the mark of bhakti is equally the mark of mastery: the expert who never stops learning not from anxiety but from genuine wonder.
