Action started from sheer delusion, with no thought for its consequences, the harm it does, the resources it wastes, or whether you have the capacity to finish it, is declared tamasic.

Anapekshya — without considering — anubandham, kshayam, himsam, paurusham — consequent bondage, depletion, harm, one's own capacity. Mohat — from delusion — arabhyate karma — action is begun. Tat tamasam uchyate — that is called tamasika.

Krishna names tamasika action with five blindnesses: no thought of consequences; no thought of resource-loss; no thought of harm; no thought of capacity; only delusion driving.

Shankara reads action born of moha — undertaken without discerning anubandha, kshaya, himsa, or paurusha — as tamasika. This is not merely moral failure but epistemic failure: the agent mistakes himself for the doer, ignores consequences, and proceeds blindly. The five-fold blindness is what tamas produces in action; the bhakta is alerted to recognize the pattern in himself or others.

Madhusudana anchors this with a concrete historical example: Duryodhana's declaration of war is precisely tamasika karma — undertaken without considering anubandha — Duryodhana's own destruction; kshaya — the loss of bodily vigor, wealth, armies; himsa — harm to all involved; paurusha — whether his side could actually prevail. The kevala-aviveka — undiscriminating delusion — drove the war. The chapter's example is the very battle Arjuna is now contemplating.

Ramanuja reads action commenced without considering consequent sorrow — anubandha — loss of resources, harm to creatures, one's capacity to complete it — and above all without considering Paramatman's ultimate agency — as tamasika. The deepest tamas is failure to recognize Bhagavan as true kartri; the jiva who acts as if he were the sole agent has fallen into the deepest of the three guna-modes. The bhakta's tamas-recognition is theological-relational.

Madhva reads on the bheda-frame: mohat the act arises — heedless of anubandha, kshaya, himsa, paurusha. For the paratantra-jiva, delusion is precisely forgetting bheda — the jiva displaces Hari's svatantra status by acting as autonomous agent. The bheda-frame's tamas-diagnosis: the jiva's metaphysical inversion produces all the empirical blindnesses; correct seeing of bheda would prevent every one of the four oversights.

Vallabha reads anubandha as duhkha. Tat avichharya — without reflecting on that — mohat yat karma prarabhyate, tat tamasam udahritam.

Vallabha's gloss compresses to a single movement: the agent does not pause to consider that anubandha is duhkha, and so mohat the action simply begins. Pushti-marga: where prasada-pause has been refused, action launches itself blindly; the bhakta who has tasted prasada always pauses before acting.

Shridhara reads tamasika action as that which is commenced anavekshya — without examining — its consequent results, expenditure of wealth, para-pida — harm to others — or sva-samarthya — own capacity — and is driven by kevalam mohat — delusion alone. He glosses anubandha as paschat-bhavi-shubha-ashubha — subsequent good and bad consequences. Five oversights, one root: moha. The chapter's tamas-mode of action is precisely diagnosed.

Advaita

Before starting a major project, pause and ask: 'Am I clear-headed right now, or am I acting from agitation or compulsion?' Tamasic initiation is not about the project's content but about the epistemic state of the initiator. If you cannot articulate the consequent costs and harms, you are operating from aviveka — stop, restore clarity, then begin.

Dvaita

In any consequential decision — a business expansion, a confrontation, a resource commitment — explicitly list the harm to other parties. Not as an afterthought, but as a first step. The Dvaita frame says those other parties are Hari-dependent beings whose welfare is not separate from your own duty. Ignoring them is not just ethical failure; it is a failure of recognition.

Bhakti

Sridhara's precision offers a practical checklist: before starting anything significant, explicitly review (a) what follows afterward — good and bad, (b) what it will cost financially, (c) who might be hurt, (d) whether you actually have the capacity to finish. The tamasic person skips this checklist entirely. Making it a habit — even a 60-second review — is the antidote.

Advaita-Bhakti

Madhusudana's Duryodhana example points to a specific pattern: large-scale tamasic action often involves a person of capability who simply refuses to examine consequences because examination might require changing course. If you find yourself avoiding thinking through consequences of a decision you have already emotionally committed to — that is the Duryodhana pattern. The antidote is forced articulation: write out the costs before acting.
