Abhisandhaya — having intended — phalam — fruit. Dambha-artham — for the sake of ostentation. Yat ijyate — what is sacrificed. Tam yajnam viddhi rajasam. Two motivations — fruit-targeting and display-targeting — convert the same outer rite into rajasika yajna. The form is preserved; the orientation is corrupted.

Shankara's gloss is terse: abhisandhaya means uddishya — intending, targeting. The two motives are alternatives — phala-targeting or dambha-targeting; both equally rajasic. Such yajna obstructs antahkarana-shuddhi, the inner-instrument purification that alone opens the path to jnana. The sattvika yajna purifies; the rajasika does not, even when ritually correct in form. The diagnostic depth: same act, different inner orientation, different effect.

Madhusudana offers the panel's richest analysis, identifying three sub-cases signaled by 'api cha eva': otherworldly fruit alone — svarga-adi — intended, without concern for antahkarana-shuddhi; dambha alone — appearing dharmic before the world — without otherworldly intent; and both motives simultaneously — visible piety combined with desire for results. Three rajasika types within the single category. The bhakta's diagnostic must distinguish them.

Ramanuja identifies two corruptions compounded in rajasika sacrifice: phala-abhisandhi — being yoked to desired fruit — and dambha-garbha — ostentation carried within like a concealed seed — with yashas-phala — fame as the real harvest — as its distinguishing mark. Action becomes kainkarya only when the agent surrenders fruit to Bhagavan; the moment fruit is targeted or display is sought, the relational structure breaks. The bhakti-frame's diagnostic is precise.

Madhva reads on the bheda-frame: sacrifice performed with eye on personal phala and for dambha is rajasa. The jiva is paratantra, wholly subordinate to svatantra Hari, who alone disposes of fruit. Targeting fruit is the jiva's structural inversion: claiming a disposition that belongs to Hari alone. Targeting dambha is the jiva's claiming a recognition that belongs to Hari alone. Either way, the rite is rajasic because the jiva's paratantra-mode has been broken.

Vallabha reads sacrifice performed by fixing mind on phala or dambha as rajasa. In shuddhadvaita, Brahman alone is real and the world is His genuine self-manifestation — no shadow-doctrine of maya intervenes. Sacrifice belongs within Krishna's lila; phala-targeting and dambha-targeting are both modes of treating the lila as an external system to be manipulated, rather than received as prasada. The pushti-marga reading: the bhakta's rite is offered into the lila; the rajasika's rite is extracted from it.

Shridhara reads dambha sharply as sva-mahattva-khyapana-artham — performed for the purpose of proclaiming one's own greatness — paired with phala-abhisandhi as the twin engines of rajasic sacrifice. The rite is outwardly correct in form yet inwardly hollowed by self-promotion: it wears the garb of dharmic observance while harvesting social capital. Vyavahāra · try it in your life

Advaita

When preparing a public speech or report, notice whether your effort is calibrated to the quality of understanding you might produce in others (sattvic) or to how you will be perceived afterward (rajasic dambha). The Advaita practitioner applies the same test Shankara applies to ritual: if the terminal referent of your attention is your own image, the action binds even when technically competent.

Viśiṣṭādvaita

In workplace service, before taking on a high-visibility project ask: am I drawn to this because it is the most useful seva (service) I can offer, or because it will build my reputation? Ramanuja's 'dambha-garbha' — ostentation carried as a concealed seed — applies precisely here: the corruption is hidden inside what looks like dedication, and yashah-phala (fame as real harvest) quietly redirects the action away from the Lord and toward the self.

Dvaita

Charitable giving becomes rajasic when the gift is sized or publicized to signal status rather than to benefit the recipient. In Dvaita terms the donor has displaced Hari as the terminal point of the action — the gift orbits the donor's social standing rather than serving as an act of dependence on and gratitude toward the independent Lord. The corrective is giving that the donor cannot take credit for: anonymous, uncelebrated, unadvertised.

Śuddhādvaita

In creative work — art, music, writing — the Pushti-marga lens asks whether the work is an offering flowing from Krishna's own energy moving through you, or a product manufactured by your skill for your portfolio. Rajasic creation in this framework is work where the artist is the subject and the audience is the court of approval. Sattvic creation in Pushti terms is work that surprises even its maker, arriving as prasada rather than output.

Bhakti

Sridhara's 'sva-mahattva-khyapana' — proclaiming one's own greatness — is the diagnostic for rajasic social media use: posting about one's practice, pilgrimage, or generosity primarily to display personal dharmic seriousness. The bhakti practitioner tests each post: does this give something to the reader, or does it mainly accumulate evidence of my virtue? The sacrifice of attention and time is rajasic when the audience is one's own reputation.

Advaita-Bhakti

Madhusudana's three-case analysis applies to professional credentialing and achievement: (1) pursuing certification purely for career advancement (otherworldly fruit mode); (2) pursuing it to signal expertise to peers with no underlying interest in mastery (dambha mode); (3) pursuing it for both simultaneously. All three modes, however common and socially rewarded, leave the antahkarana (inner organ) uncleaned because none is organized around understanding itself. The 'tu' particle — the contrast with genuine learning — is the daily self-examination: am I doing this for the thing, or for what the thing makes me look like?
