These faults of the family-destroyers, which cause the mixing of social orders, uproot the duties of birth-communities and the eternal duties of the clan.

ekras · bhāṣya

Arjuna closes the loop. "By these misdeeds of the family-destroyers — the ones that produce caste-mixing — the eternal duties of caste and family are wiped out." He has been building this since 1.40. War kills the men. The men dying takes the family-rituals with them. The rituals gone, lawlessness rises. Lawlessness rising, the women lose their bearings. The women losing their bearings, the castes mix. The castes mixing, dharma itself is unmade — both kula-dharma and jati-dharma.

Ramsukhdas Maharaj draws the distinction carefully. Kula-dharma is what one specific household carries. The way this family lights its lamps, fasts on this day, names its children, marries its daughters — the inheritance that makes a kula a kula. Jati-dharma is what an entire varna shares across all its households. The general duties laid down by shastra for all kshatriyas, or all vaishyas. Arjuna is saying both layers go. Not just the family pattern, but the broader social rule the family was meant to instantiate. And once the patterns stop being practiced, they stop existing — that is what shashvata means here. Not eternal as in untouchable, but eternal as in carried unbroken. Stop carrying it for one generation and the chain snaps. This is the climax of Arjuna's social-collapse argument.

Krishna has been listening. He has not interrupted. The next move belongs to him. The argument is sincere. The grief is real. But the argument is also incomplete — it accounts for the cost of acting and not the cost of refusing. That is the asymmetry the Gita will work on.

Vyavahāra · try it in your life

Advaita

When a long-standing institutional practice — a family ritual, a professional tradition, a community norm — is threatened with extinction, notice the two distinct anxieties: the conventional grief (vyavahāra) that real continuity is being lost, and the deeper question of whether the self that upholds the practice is itself the unchanging witness. Advaita asks you to hold both: honour the conventional grief without mistaking it for the final reality.

Viśiṣṭādvaita

In Rāmānuja's frame, the moment when every limb perspires and you cannot act is not failure — it is the ripening that makes you ready to receive guidance. If you find yourself paralysed before a decision that threatens everything you owe to your family or community, treat that paralysis not as weakness but as the moment to turn toward the one who can actually see the whole picture.

Dvaita

Madhva's theology insists that even legitimate dharma-arguments (Arjuna is not wrong about jāti-dharma) must yield when a direct, explicit command from a higher authority is present. In practice: when your supervisor, your tradition, or your vow gives you a clear directive that overrides your own dharma-calculations, the Dvaita instinct is to obey the command and trust that the ordainer sees what you cannot.

Śuddhādvaita

The Puṣṭi-mārga reading invites you to reframe your worst social or institutional losses — the collapse of a tradition, a community fracture — as part of a larger orchestration you cannot yet see. This is not passive resignation; it is the practice of seeing disruption as the cleared ground where grace (prasāda) can arrive, unrequested and unearned.

Bhakti

Arjuna's argument is a model of reverence for received wisdom: he does not invent a private ethics but appeals to what lineage-keepers have always known about pindas, ancestors, and ritual continuity. In daily life, before discarding a family or community practice as outdated, the bhakti-philological instinct asks: what chain of care does this practice sustain, and who loses pindas if it stops?

Advaita-Bhakti

Madhusūdana's key move is epistemic humility: 'we have heard this from teachers, we did not reason it ourselves.' In your own life, when you are making a high-stakes argument about consequences — moral, social, professional — ask whether you are drawing on transmitted wisdom or on your own inference. Citing the paramparā honestly ('my tradition teaches X') is stronger and more honest than presenting inherited knowledge as private discovery.
